General Information
Monaco plays host to one of the oldest races in the Formula 1 calendar. In 1929 the inaugural Monaco Grand Prix was organised by Anthony Noghes, which was won by William Grover-Williams in a Bugatti which bore the colours which would later become world famous as British Racing Green.

Between 1936 and 1939 the Monaco Grand Prix counted towards the European Championship. Mercedes-Benz dominated these events, although the race was cancelled in 1938.

The first Monaco Grand Prix to count towards the F1 World Championship was won by Juan Manuel Fangio. However it would be 1955 before the Monaco Grand Prix would be a regular occurence in Formula 1.

Since then the race has been won by legends such as Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Gilles Villeneuve, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher. The most recent race in 2005 was won by Kimi Raikkonen for McLaren-Mercedes, some 21 years since Alain Prost won McLarens first Monaco Grand Prix.

The circuit itself presents a unique environment for the drivers and cars. The walled, sloped layout of the track can often lead to unexpected results, such as when Olivier Panis won for Ligier in 1996. Crashes are often seen in Monaco, with corners such as La Rascasse, Loews and Sainte Devote becoming household names. Also unique to F1 is the tunnel, where cars are plunged into darkness for around 10 seconds.
