| Biography |
Kimi Raikkonen spent almost all of the 1990s in karting competitions winning many championships.
In 1999 Raikkonen contested his first Formula Renault race and finished third. 2000 saw him move to British Formula Renault where he became champion with seven wins out of ten races, and finished on the podium in each of those ten races. He tested for Sauber late in 2000 and the team were so impressed with the Finn's skills that they offered him a Grand Prix drive for the 2001 season.
The FIA had to grant Raikkonen a special dispensation for his super-licence to compete in Formula One since the Finn had only contested 23 official races beforehand.
Raikkonen did not disappoint claiming nine points in his debut season with Sauber, and tenth place in the drivers' championship. The Finn moved to McLaren for the 2002 season where he replaced Mika Hakkinen.
He began to come of age in 2003 claiming his maiden Grand Prix victory in Malaysia and finishing runner up to Michael Schumacher in the drivers' championship.
The 2004 McLaren was dreadful. Raikkonen and Coulthard looked at sea fighting with the Saubers. However a mid-season update gave the team race-winning opportunities again, and Kimi rewarded the teams hard work by winning at Spa.
In 2005 McLaren and Kimi emerged as geniune championship winners. Wins in Spain, Monaco and Canada have given Kimi a shot at the championship. However reliability problems hampered his chances, with successive engine failures at Silverstone, Magny Cours and Hockenheim. Despite taking the same amount of victories as Fernando Alonso, the Spaniard beat Raikkonen to the title by a country mile.
In 2006 Raikkonen had another dissapointing year with McLaren. With no victory at all, but managed to get on the podium six times that season. He became 5th in the championship. Although it will be his last year at McLaren. Moving on to Ferrari for the 2007 season.
In 2007, he gets what he deserves, finelly the mechanical problems he always had in his carreer keep away. He becomes World Champion in the last 2 races, where Hamilton failed to get something right... He won 6 races that season and stays another year at Ferrari.
A new start of the season. However it wasn't Raikkonen his season, he simply made to much mistakes at the end of the season, despired to defeat Hamilton on the track he lost even from team-mate Massa. Although he becomes third in the championship they ensure the Constructors title for Ferrari, but it could have been a better season for Raikkonen. |
