| Biography |
Webber contested various Australian karting series from 1991-1993 before making his single-seater debut in the 1994 Australian Formula Ford Championship.
In 1996 he moved to the British Formula Ford Championship and finished runner-up in the championship. He graduated to British Formula 3 in 1997 where he finished fourth in the championship while testing for the Mercedes AMG sports car team (FIA GT Championship).
Webber drove in the 1998 FIA GT Championship for the works Mercedes Junior Team, partnered by Bernd Schneider. The Australian finished runner-up in the drivers' battle that year with five race wins to his name.
Le Mans 24-Hour followed in 1999 where he was an official driver for the Mercedes AMG team. He also tested for drives in Formula 3000 and in F1 for the Arrows team.
Webber contested the International F3000 Championship in 2000 with the Arrows F3000 team. He finished third overall with a victory, three podiums, and two fastest laps to his name. The results earned him an evaluation test with the Benetton F1 team.
Webber continued in International F3000 the following year but was also taken on as the Benetton F1 team's official test driver. His F1 race debut came in 2002 with the Minardi team. A memorable fifth place finish in his debut Grand Prix - on home soil no less - was a highlight of the season.
Webber's performances at Minardi earned him enough attention down his pit lane that he was snapped up at the end of the season by the Jaguar Racing team.
