Ecclestone happy with 'wins takes title'
Bernie Ecclestone

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone is happy with the FIA's decision to change the way in which the title is decided; the owner of Formula One Management (FOM), the sport's commercial rights holder, first suggested the idea publically which involves the driver who wins most races taking the World Championship.

"It's a modification of my idea of medals, it's a good start," Ecclestone told BBC Radio 5 Live. "The idea is to get people racing so if somebody is second he'll go for the win rather than thinking that, if he happens to get past, he'll only gain two points more - that's not a big motivation to try and get past somebody."

The FIA's adaptation of the idea does not involve medals being handed to the drivers, despite Bernie's original plan for the 'most wins' system. General criticism of the sport earlier in the decade frequently blamed the cars and circuits for a number of processional Grands Prix, a criticism which Ecclestone feels is not fully justified: "For what reason would they want to get past?" he asked. "If somebody was second, why would they take the risk to get past for only two extra points? If I was second I wouldn't bother."

He then went on to say that, with the new system in place, despite spicing up the racing it shouldn't make a major difference to the outcome of championship: "Really and truly we know the guys who are going to win are happy, and those who won't win don't care! It's a nice situation to be in - there's all these complaints about the cars and circuits they're on but I think it comes down to the guys driving them."

2008 saw the title decided on the very final corner of the Brazilian Grand Prix, as Lewis Hamilton retook the required fifth position to clinch the title. "Lewis could have screwed the whole thing up," Ecclestone commented, "because on a couple of occasions when he could and should have overtaken, he didn't."

"The new system was unanimously agreed by the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC), so it went through nicely," he concluded. Tuesday's meeting in Paris also resulted in the FIA's new cost-cutting proposals to start next year, such as a £30m budget cap, which Ecclestone talked briefly about: "It makes a lot of difference for a team which has been used to spending 300 million. We'll see."
